Quality time, not gift, counts on V - Day

Munich, Feb 14 (DPA) For weeks there has been no escaping ads for flowers, perfumes and chocolates. People will probably buy their special someone at least a small Valentine's Day gift even though red roses may cost double on Feb 14.

However, giving flowers is not the only way of showing affection. Psychologists and relationship counsellors advice "cultivating the relationship" instead.

"It's always a good idea to do something for your relationship, so why not take advantage of Valentine's Day?" said Mathias Voelchert, a Munich-based author.

While it was neither enough to last the entire year nor compensate for forgotten anniversaries, he said it was nonetheless a good opportunity to let a partner know just how much he or she means.

"This is easier for some people on Valentine's Day because they're not alone - which makes it less embarrassing," said Hamburg relationship counsellor Joerg Wesner.

Daycare Provider Faces Two Felony Charges

The Dane County District Attorney filed two felony charges against Debra Koenig today for allegedly abusing a child and causing reckless injury. Koenig ran a daycare center in her home and was caring for the 2-year-old when she started throwing up in January. Doctors discovered she tore her pancreas and severed her small intestine. According to the criminal complaint, when the child was throwing up in the bathroom, Koenig pushed her "very hard" so the child fell over and landed on a stool. The complaint alledges that the child laid on the stool for up to a minute. Koenig reportedly told investigators that she "snapped" out of anger at the child when she pushed her. When the child's mother picked her up hours later, she appeared "limp" like a "corpse." She rushed the girl to Meriter Hospital and later UW Children's Hospital.

Where does the day go?

Go on, take a few minutes out of your working day — call your kid, book your next haircut, pay some bills. You won't be alone. A poll released Thursday found that employees spend an average of 36 minutes a day — the equivalent of three hours a week — doing personal tasks at the office, anything from surfing the Internet to chatting with the babysitter. Men were more likely to take a pause from their official work at the office. .
